Wheat, I could have imagined, but did you know that McDonald's French Fries also contain milk? From the allergy statement on the ingredient list:
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK (Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients.)
The natural beef flavor is a component of the vegetable oil which they use, which incidentally, also contains Soybean oil. My son had eaten fries from McD's in the past, during that time when he still had milk allergies, but never had allergic reactions, so I'm not sure whether it's just the allergy statement that's new, or if they've changed their formulation recently.
At any rate, if you have severe allergic reactions to these food ingredients, be warned.

The allergy statement popped up in early 2006 when the new labeling laws took affect. My son was eating them and not reacting so his allergist said to continue giving them to him. The problem for us came about when they switched to the "trans fat free" oil. I called McD's corporate to see if the wheat and milk concentration would be the same and they couldn't tell me. The only way we'd know is if we let him eat them and waited to see if he reacted or not. At that time we decided it wasn't worth the chance. No more McD's for us which was hard because he really loved them and it was his only "special treat".

Isn't it sad that such a big corporation wouldn't be willing to go an extra mile to ascertain if the new oil they use contain more of the beef flavoring? I guess they earn enough revenues from non-food allergic patrons. :(

McDonald's has actually tried (a little bit) to make compromises with dieters of various kinds over the years. They're not the most conscientious mass-junk-food purveyor, but they're far from the worst.
I do sympathize for your son, mama. But I think it is silly to be worried about these things when after all you are talking about feeding yoru son a FRIED REFORMULATED POTATO. Carbohydrates and salt in boiling fat. Please get him interested in a treat like raisins or grapes or something that's actually nutritious food!
