Spring time is once again upon us and it's time to work on those gardens! If you have pollen allergies, it does limit the type of plants you can grow in your garden. Generally, opting for insect-pollinated plants will lower the chances of your pollen allergies getting triggered. Here are some insect-pollinated plants you may consider:

Garden plants: Alyssum, begonia, cactus, clematis, columbine, crocus, daffodil, daisy, dusty miller, geranium, hosta, impatiens, iris, lily, narcissus, pansy, petunia, phlox, rose, salvia, snapdragon, sunflower, tulips, verbena, zinnia

Grasses: St. Augustine (not for all climates, however)

Shrubs: Azalea, boxwood, hibiscus, hydrangea, viburnum

Trees: Apple, cherry, dogwood, magnolia, pear, plum

If you are extremely allergic, however, it might be better to try your green thumb on a vegetable patch instead. If you're a total beginner, you may practice with vegetable and herb growing kits first. They already contain vegetable seeds, pots, soil, possibly some fertilizer. There are those made for window sills, or for those who don't fancy tilling the soil, there are also hydroponic systems (plants grow in nutrient solutions instead of soil).

Go, and enjoy the sunnier weather. Give back to the environment and grow a plant today!
