Tips on Travelling With Allergies and Asthma
Filed in archive Asthma , Living with Allergies on July 12, 2006
Summer is finally here. The heat is on, the kids are off from school and everyone's heading somewhere! Would be nice if we can leave our allergies behind, but, alas, they're coming along, whether we like it or not. However, there are steps we can make to make life and holidays a bit more bearable, allergies withstanding. Here are some tips from the AAAAI:
If you're travelling by car:
- Open windows and turn on the air-con about 10 minutes before you start the drive to help get rid of dust mites and molds in the system.
- Close the windows and use the air-con during the drive if you have pollen and other outdoor allergies.
- Keep your car smoke-free.
- Travel during the early morning or late evening when the air quality is better.
Travelling by plane or ship can be more tricky since you cannot simply get off when you start showing allergic reactions. Better have a dose (or two) of epinephrine on stand-by. For those with allergic asthma, you might want to arrange for supplemental oxygen, too. For those with skin allergies and eczema, don't forget your lotions and ointments.
Getting there is just half the question. Where are you going to stay? Perhaps you might want to considered booking a pure room? Check out the AAAAI for more tips and reminders on travelling with allergies and asthma.
So where are you headed to this summer? Should you find an allergy-friendly destination, would you care to share it with us?
