While allergy symptoms in humans are characterized by runny noses, itchy eyes, sneezing or wheezing, allergies in pets typically show up as scratching, chewing, rubbing, head-shaking or diarrhea.
Pet dogs are commonly afflicted by allergies. If your pets suffer from allergies, what can you do? Here are some offered solutions:
1. First of all, always ask your veterinarian for help in controlling your pet's allergies. You can boost it with an allergy-prevention regimen at home, such as vacuuming, using electrostatic cleaning products (such as Swiffers) on floor surfaces and using room or whole house filtration systems in order to limit the amount of dust and other irritants that your pets can get.
2. These days, veterinary dermatologists recommend bathing pets at least every week (up to everyday for extremely at-risk, allergic pets) during the spring and summer seasons to help wash allergens off their coat and skin. Though for some dogs and cats that are difficult to bathe, spray-on products or wipes for a dry bath will often work well too.
3. When more powerful treatments are needed, veterinarians offer new medication options such as immunotherapy or hyposensitization. Also, the small injections of allergens under the pet's skin can also be effective for most dogs with atopic dermatitis or constantly itchy skin.
For scratching and chewing Atopica is the treatment used. Your veterinarian may recommend special air filters for your home such as something made just for pets called PetAirapy (comes in both room and whole-house models) to help prevent airborne allergens from landing on or being inhaled by your pets.
4. Pets can also suffer from food allergies. Sometimes they are allergic to some pet foods. Allergic reactions to pet food are usually caused by proteins (can include beef, egg, milk or cheese products, soy or fish). Have your veterinarian guide you through food-elimination trials (to pinpoint the culprit) and recommend a diet that's not only nutritionally complete but contains pre-digested proteins.
For pets needing medications for food allergies, Greenies Pill Pockets Allergy Formula capsules could be of help.
