Shopping for Nickel-Free Jewelry
Filed in archive Metal Allergies on December 27, 2006
Those of you looking at jewelry for gifts, find out first if your recipient have metal allergies. Reports say that up to four percent of the population is allergic to nickel, a metal commonly found in jewelries.
When purchasing jewelry, do not be taken in by claims that the items are "hypoallergenic". That's too vague, and may still trigger metal allergies. What you are looking for are items that are "nickel-free".
And even for necklaces or bracelets made from natural beads or Gems, pay attention to the clasps, which are often made of metals. The rest of the accessory may be ok, but if the clasps causes itchiness and rashes, your jewelry will more likely end up in storage than being worn.

I agree with the above advice - look for items stamped "nickel-free". And good luck - they are few and far between in the US!
