Schools Should Have an Allergy Lesson Plan
Filed in archive Allergy Support Groups on July 10, 2007
Schools should have an "allergy lesson plan", according to Weymouth Public Schools Health Services Head Nurse Janet Brooks - who is proposing a district wide policy to strengthen an existing plan to protect children who attend local schools from life-threatening allergies.
"We have individual health plans for children who have allergies, but there still needs to be a policy for the school district."
The proposed policy requires the collaboration of each school nurse to the designated school department employees who must be informed about a student with a life-threatening allergy.
The plan recommends having a child wear a bracelet or necklace that identifies those with a life-threatening allergy.
Under the guidelines, parents will be responsible for sharing all information about their child's allergy, such as medications and food products they cannot have, with the school nurse.
Indeed, a great proposal. Read the full story here.

I wish all school systems would adopt a universal plan. It would make it easier on everyone involved. It might also take some of anger away from the "peanut free classroom/school" situation. That seems to be such a hot button issue right now and it's pitting parents against each other. So unneccessary. A well implemented plan would also give the allergy parents comfort as their child moves from school to school during their educational career.
