Potato Allergies

Have you ever encountered people who have allergies to potatoes?
Belgian doctors are looking into cases of children who seems to be allergic to cooked white potato, showing allergic symptoms such as wheezing, vomiting, and immediate skin reactions upon exposure to white potato.
Results of various experiments, including a potato challenge, in which a small amount of cooked potato was applied to the inside of the child's lower lip, and a skin prick test, using extracts of homemade cooked and uncooked potato, indicate that the children were indeed allergic to cooked potato, the researchers report.
Their observations were published in the September issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. They still don't know which protein in potato is it that causes the allergic reaction.
If you have unexplained eczema, or allergic symptoms, you just might think about it. Consult with your doctor.

Just got a positive result by rast test for potato allergy. I seem to be able to eat cooked potatoes but react badly when peeling and preparing raw potatoes. Immunologist advised avoidance

I have had hand ezcema for approx 8 weeks now. Have had oral steroids as well as creams etc. They said they cant do patch tests as could be many things. I noticed that when I peeled potatoes my hands became sore then the eczema started up again. I mentioned this to the dermatologist but he said their are no allergens in potatoes. I ? this as I have read so much on here. Cant understand how he hasn't found this out either???

my son is three years old and is very much has a allergy to potato's rare and cooked.. also all corn products and tomato which is in the same botanical group as potato's .. when he has potatos he get very ill but at the same time he becomes very aggressive, and acts very bad ..So its hard for him to eat because almost everything has corn in it and he can't have potato's and some other foods he has allergy's to.. he also has asthma and eczema.. basically he its meat and fruit that is it.. he is three and wears a 18 months in clothes but because of his height i have to but 3 t and tie up his pants so they don't fall off...post it took the doctors two years to figure this out.. my son threw up everyday for two years three times a day before he was linked to all the allergy's the doctors said was just impossible and also my son has allergy to immunizations he can't have those either some of them the ones he can i make sure he has..

Just discovered horrible potato allergy - 39 year old woman. Eczema disappeared after one week of avoiding potatoes! Eating potatoes gives me awful cramps and diahrrea right after a meal. When I peeled potatoes my eczema on my hands got really bad. I am 100 % better after 1 week of avoiding potatoes - I was lethargic, sick, joint pains, bloating, irritable, hormone issues due to potatoes. If you have a child with eczema, please check this out. This allergy has almost ruined my life.

I can resonate with Steph. I have been dealing with chronic diarrhea and cramping for years and have tried all sorts of testing for food allergies and avoidance diets. No one has EVER suggested an allergy to potatoes. In the past few days I have discovered that shortly after having consumed potatoes in any form I become very achy all over for several hours and usually experience the cramping and diarrhea the next morning. I would love to have more info from anyone who can relate to my experience or explain why my body reacts this way.

My son has severe allergies to all sorts of foods. When he was 7 months old we found out that he was and still allergic to garlic, peanuts, potatoes, rice, wheat, rye, soy, chicken, turkey, pork, beef, eggs, and just recently found out that he is allergic to milk. He is 15 months old now and his diet is basically oatmeal, friut, and milk. Since birth I knew that something wasn't right, he was extremely gassy he would get constipated and then diarrea and he constantly had a runny nose. when he was 2 weeks old he developed a rash all over his face neck arms and legs. Now his condition has improved because I know what foods to avoid, but he still has eczema on his face and ears. I can relate to carolyn, I just recently noticed that my son has behavioral problems and sometimes acts very aggressive and angry he tends to act this way before he has an allergic reaction. I am still learning how to deal with the allergies my son has, if your child has similar symptoms the best thing to do is get your child tested for allergies so that you know what foods to avoid from their diet, you will notice a big change.

I just took my daughter in to have a food allergie test done. I was shocked to find out she is allergic to Potatos. She is five and for three years she has had major stomach problems finally this could be what has been the cause.

Response to Nancy - I suffer malabsorption and have come to the conclusion that potatoes are making the chronic diarrhea worse, like Nancy the diarrhea is in the morning but as I've never heard of potatoes causing this it's a relief to know I'm not the only one who think's it can be due to potatoes.

Hi-
I'm back again - 39, female - found out I have horrible potatoe allergy - cooked and uncooked. My hands break out red and eczema from handling potatoes, tomatoes, and red peppers (just discovered the peppers thing and then found out it goes along with potato allergy). Tomatoes make me sick for several days - very tired, depressed, unable to get out of a chair. Potatoes give me a rush to the bathroom about one hour or less after I ate them. Most of these allergies will not show up on a clinical test. I'm figuring this out by seeing what vegetables and fruits I can handle with my bare hands without breaking out. I know citrus fruits make my hands break out as well. I read you shouldn't ingest any food you can't handle with your hands without a reaction. So, I'm stopping all things mentioned. Oh, had constant menstrual bleeding for years (like almost 9 years). I was on anti-depressants and finally put on estrogen and progesterone pills to have a regular menstrual cycle. After 2 weeks of no potatoes or tomatoes, I noticed the hormone pills were giving me headaches all of a sudden. So I quit them. Guess what? My hormones are completely normal now - regular cycles with no pills. I also feel a million times better - like I can go out and take a walk (I've been too tired to do anything for the last few years) and have a normal life without being exhausted. Just want everyone to know what we are dealing with here.

I'm going through similar things right now with potatoes and tomatoes. I'm wondering what the allergy doctors said to you if nothing showed up on the allergy skin tests. Are there other kinds of tests that they do? If I eat anything with tomato in it a break out with big pimples on my chin and around my mouth... when I eat potatoes it's worse, and I'm starting to get swelling in my lips, and it's moving into my throat and my tongue. It takes about 24 hours for me to react. I am going to see an allergy doctor as soon as I can get in...

For years I thought I was the only person on this planet with an potato allergy. I have the problem that some potato's are more "dangerous" than other. From a sneeze to a trip to the hospital.

we are new to the potato allergy, but he has also just been diagnosed with carrot and peanut allergy. My husband is almost 62 and has had vomiting and diarhea, IBS most of his life and all the insurance in the world never led us to a doctor who would 'go there' until now. Thank God!

Have eczema from tomatoes and potatos, Allergy tests came out negative. I have had to research on my own what contains potato derivatives. Am finally clearing my eczema. Don't count on the medical people helping you. I have struggled for a long time (10 months) because I wasn't believed due to negative testing. Potato is in alot of things, Vit A palmitate was my best discovery. Since finding out that it has potato derivative I am doing better. Any help with what people have eliminated to help, please let me know.

my girlfriend is a chef and over the last few days has been getting a painful reaction on the back of her hands. it is visible as what looks like lots of small blood vessels in the skin and only appears on the back of her hands. the only thing we can connect this to is peeling potatoes at work. what are the chances of this being the cause? thanks.

I have been suffering from 28 food allergies since the age of 16, including potatoes, tomatoes, corn, onions, garlic etc.
I try my best to avoid the 28 foods, but my diet is really poor when I take out all of the foods.
Does anyone know of any homeopathic things I can try? I am desperate at this point...

I had a skin test done to find out what food allergies I have and it came up to be potatoes. I found out about 1 1/2 years ago and have been potato free. I did have one french fry after a year and I ended up in the urgent care due to a reaction, almost had to use my epipen. I have to avoid and thing with potato or potato starch. It took about 15 years for someone to figure this out... I used to have severe chest pain, abdominal pain, symptoms of heartburn and many other reactions. I feel so much better now that I do not eat potatoes. I owe a lot to my Dr, I have many other severe allergies and he keeps me going the best I can!
