I'm all for natural remedies, but only when scientific studies have proven their efficacy. I've used homeopathic medicines in the past but I'm not sure it really worked and partly because I couldn't understand its scientific basis, I remain skeptic. Having said all that, I know how people desperate for relief would try anything that could help ease their allergies or other ailments. Sometimes, including me.

What's your take on probiotics? Do you know how they work against allergic disease?

Probiotics make a lot of sense if you subscribe to the hygiene hypothesis. You get exposed to (non-pathogenic) bugs and could possibly reduce hypersensitivity to certain allergens. However, I don't see consumption of probiotic products as a form of treatment; more like something which boosts the immune system in a general sense. There are a number of studies linking probiotics to lower incidence of allergies and asthma, but the relationship doesn't seem to be causal.
