Latex Allergy Awareness Week

Filed in archive Allergy Basics , Allergy Support Groups , Latex/Rubber Allergies on September 21, 2006

How much do you know about latex allergies? Did you know that an estimated 3 million people in America alone, suffers are allergic to latex? A big fraction at risk of developing and/or suffering from latex sensitivities are those working in healthcare because of their frequent and regular contact with rubber latex-containing materials such as gloves, and tubings in medical equipment. Some are sensitive enough such that consumption of foods that are prepared by personnel wearing latex gloves, or those which use latex in packaging materials, are enough to trigger a reaction. There are also cross-reactions reported with a variety of food items such as certian fruits and vegetables, nuts and shellfish.

On October 1-7, 2006, the American Latex Allergy Association (A.L.E.R.T., Inc.) will hold the Latex Allergy Awareness Week. A state proclamation has been received from Governor Jim Doyle to officially designate the week in Wisconsin.

If you would like to collaborate and celebrate the Latex Allergy Awareness Week in your state, you can also request your Governor for a proclamation. You can see Alert's sample proclamation request letter for guidance.
