Introducing Milk and Dairy Products to Babies at Risk of Food Allergies
Filed in archive Food Allergies on January 20, 2009
My little one is almost 9 months old and I've been wondering whether I could already introduce milk-containing baby foods. I see commercially available baby food jars that contain yoghurt, cheese, milk and cream as ingredients and the labels indicate that they are recommended for babies from around 6-7 months old.
However, given my older child's history of having had food allergies (milk allergy among them), I've so far avoiding milk-containing recipes. Experts recommend postponing milk altogether until after 1 year. Well, we've gone this far without milk, a few more months shouldn't be that hard!

I highly recommend waiting until after a year if you have a history of milk allergies. My son went into anaphylaxis at 8 or 9 months with one bite of yogurt. So scary!

Take the Quesswork OUT of FOOD ALLERGIES !
A simple IgE Blood Test will Tell You.
Per Below.. For your Review / Consideration.
It APPEARS > Our Infants / Children Do NOT OutGrow their basic Milk & Egg ALLERGIES in the TimeFrame Previously Thought.
Unfortunatley... Old School FOOD Allergy Thought.. tranlates to "They will OutGrow their Allergy" results in Health & Emotional Trauma for both Infant & Parents ( Ouch ! ).. while they wait.
Further..
while FOOD Allergy "may' dissapate .. FOOD Allergies are then allowed / replaced by Respiratory / InHalant Allergy .. in ALLERGY March's Progression to Allergic Asthma ( Ouch Again ).
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center studied 1700 children with either Milk or Egg Allergy over a period of 13 years.
They found that Childhood Food Allergies these days often last into Adolescence and Beyond.
In the past, experts estimated that 75% of Milk allergies disappeared by age 3.
But findings from this study, which were published in the November and December issues of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology showed that:
² Only 20% of children with Milk allergy had outgrown the allergy by age 4
² 42% had outgrown it by age 8
² Even by age 16, 21% still had milk allergy
The findings with Egg allergy were much the same:
² Only 4% had outgrown the allergy by age 4
² 37% of the egg allergies had disappeared by age 10
² 32% of those at age 16 had outgrown their egg allergy

Thanks for the input, Joventa! will definitely be careful on this one.
DropYourAllergies: Unfortunately, neither a blood test nor a RAST test, as you should know, is 100% accurate, especially among infants. That doesn't really help, does it? Re: those published data, yes I've blogged about them here at Allergizer. We are fortunate that my son is one of those who outgrew most of his food allergies before he turned 3.

Once you do try milk, please go raw! Pasteurized milk lacks much of the original lactase - the enzyme that aids in digestion of lactose.

Hi Ruth:
Allergy Blood 100% Accurate ? Is this a realistic expectation / comparison ?
100% Diagnostic accuracy in Medicine is a rare find ..
What is known….
that it provides the necessary “ Look behind the Symptom Curtain” with diagnostics accuracy such that it can be an added component to the Child’s Allergy / Health Equation.
I am glad your Son outgrew his FOOD Allergies.
Curious to know…. Since then … Has he experienced and Respiratory / Allergic Asthma Indications ?
It is Important for Parents to know as much about ALLERGIES and the Introduction of FOOD to Infants… What to Watch for …etc.
Especially… in Infants who are Genetically PreDisposed to ALLERGY from their Parents.

> Pls find the following:
The Journal of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology found that raw milk reduced children's risk of suffering allergy-related conditions by up to 40 per cent. There are overall nutritional benefits, too. Proponents say that unpasteurised milk is so packed with nutrients that it's a virtual superfood. Unlike heat-treated milk, it is full of beneficial gut bacteria, known to improve digestion and immunity. Raw milk contains a full complement of folic acid, B vitamins, vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients that are partially or completely destroyed in pasteurisation. Raw milk drinkers also benefit from digestive enzymes, as well as something called Wulzen factor, a compound that combats arthritis and arterial stiffening. Some people with a history of digestive tract problems such as Crohn's disease swear by the curative powers of unpasteurised milk; others praise its nutritional value and its ability to strengthen the immune system.
