Hypoallergenic Apples
Filed in archive Allergy: Research and Development , Food Allergies , Hay Fever on July 3, 2006
Good news to those with allergies to apples! Plant scientists have been able to develop a type of apple that is low on those proteins that cause allergic reactions. The researchers say that the apple is safe for those with apple allergies, including those with with hay fever and are sensitive to Birch pollen (see my previous entry on oral-allergy syndrome).
Currently, the apples, called Santana, are being sold in organic food shops in the Netherlands. Perhaps, if the demand is big enough, these apples will also soon be available all over the world.
