Food Allergies

Well, yesterday, the kindergarten called me to pick him up because he threw up. They didn't say anything else, except that he doesn't seem to be feeling well. Since I didn't sense any real emergency, I got there in about 15 minutes. When I got there, the caretaker didn't volunteer any information at first, but after a few minutes admitted that he had a bite of a bread roll which apparently had nuts in it.
I almost blew off. She said they gave him his Fenistil drops, as we instructed in such cases, and he stopped complaining of itchiness on his tongue. After a few minutes, he continued playing and everything was as usual... until another half an hour. His body probably needed to get the offending food items out of his system, and so he threw up.
On one hand, I recognize that his caretakers do their best to accommodate his food allergies. On the other hand, I see that they could exert a bit more effort and treat such food incidents more seriously. Luckily, his food sensitivities are not so severe, otherwise, such a situation could have led to an anaphylaxis in an individual with stronger sensitivities.
Oh well. Lesson of the day: Never be complacent. When it comes to food allergies, you can never be too careful.
How do you deal with the people who take care of your children? How strict are they in following your instructions? Are the staff in your childcare prepared to deal with food allergy incidents?

I'm glad your sons reaction wasn't worse. My son is only two and I'm a stay at home mom, so we haven't really had to deal with this yet. When someone other than myself or my husband watch him, I leave out food he can eat and instruct not to give him anything else to eat. I am nervous about him starting preschool next year. Things will be a lot more out of my control and in the control of people who don't know my son and aren't that familiar with food allergies.

What an ordeal!
I found your site on BlogHer - I have a blog about training for the 3-Day walk for breast cancer as well as other health/fitness topics - would you be interested in a link or entry exchange?

Ruth! How did he get the bread to begin with? Even with every precaution in place, accidents happen. I'm glad that everything worked out fine. The teachers at my preschool are probably tired of me... but they have been really great. THEY remind me when there is a birthday or other occasion when there will be unusual food in my son's classroom. When I leave him for lunch (1-2 days a week), I have him wear his Check My Tag shirt. The lunch attendants like the reminder.

chupieandjsmama, when my son started, i was really anxious. fortunately, there were other older kids with food allergies, too, so the caretakers were already quite adept.
colleen, what a worthy cause! i'll check it out.
ria, they get fresh bread rolls for breakfast. one of the interns bought a nut-containing bread roll by mistake. you're right, no matter how careful one is, one can't have a 100% accident free situation. good thing there are so many products nowadays to help minimize such.
