Dust Mite Allergies in a New Category
All these years of blogging here at Allergizer, I've mistakenly placed entries about dust mite allergies under "Insect Allergies", and it's just now that I've realized what a big booboo this is.

In the first place, dust mites are not insects. Yes, they are critters, or you may even want to call them bugs, but technically, with 8 legs, they are no insects. And unlike with insect allergies which are mainly result from the stings (although some may also be allergic to the material shed off the skeleton), dust mite allergies are triggered mainly by inhalation of the residue that dust mites leave behind in the form of their feces and decaying bodies mixes with dust and becomes airborne. In other words, with insects, it's the sting one could have allergies to, while with dust mites, it's the enzymes in the feces.

So, yes, after two years of erroneously categorizing entries on dust mite allergies under insect allergies, I've now created a separate category for our "cosmopolitan houseguests". I'm not going to go through all past entries, but will now use this new category to file entries on dust mites, starting with this one.
