Now that the allergy season has started, how much do you spend on allergy medications? How much is your temporary relief costing you? Dr. Daniel More offers some ways to cut corners with cheap allergy treatments.

Still, if you have severe allergies, allergy medications can eventually eat into your budget. Allergy shots are quite costly, actually, not just in terms of money, but also in terms of time, as you would have to arrange to go to the clinic several times during the course of treatment. However, in the end, it might be the more cost-effective option. Consult your allergist if this allergy management option is suitable for you.

With the insurance I have allergy shots didn't cost much at all. But, it took a while to drive to where I had to to get them. I need to start getting them again but haven't found any place close by - I just don't have the time to drive that far now. It really sucks because the quality of my life has decreased because of the allergies. Medication is only marginally helpful. If there were only an allergist closer by I would feel much better and be more productive.

As I collected all our Epi-pens, I couldn't help but think of how much it takes to manage allergies. Between auto-injectors and over the counter medication, we spend so much on medicine. I am just grateful that we can afford it.

Even with insurance, allergy meds were expensive. I used to take 60 mg of Seldane twice a day. When Seldane was taken off the market, I got serious about controlling my environment. By removing the carpet, encasing my bedding, washing with De-Mite, and running air cleaners I live med free. I am thankful that I do not have food allergies and that I can control my outdoor allergies by making sure my grass stays mowed short and having all the "bloom" pods removed from my palm trees before they open. It did take a few years and an investment to get to this point, but I am glad to be free of the meds

One of the cheapest methods I've found to combat my allergies is an air purifier for my home. It helps in my bedroom and we also use it in the living room at times, but mostly in the bedroom. I bought it at http://www.airpurifiersdirect2u.com/
