Coconut is A Nut Afterall!
Filed in archive Food Allergies on February 10, 2009
Because of my son's dairy allergies when he was younger (he outgrew it at age 3), we still use milk in our household very sparingly- usually only for baking or sauces. Instead of cow milk, he's drinking hot chocolate made with rice milk in the mornings. For cooking, I've also been able to substitute coconut milk in many dishes requiring cream.
I've always known that coconut is botanically classified as a fruit. What I didn't know is that it is a kind of drupe, just like other tree nuts such as almonds and pistachios. No wonder the FDA classifies coconut as a tree nut!
This is horrifyingly confusing to me. I've been feeding my son a tree nut-product for so many years!!! Luckily he's not been reacting despite his allergies to (other) tree nuts! What to do now? Scratch coconut milk off the list of safe foods?

I've always been told to trust the reaction. My son is also allergic to nuts, but has never had a coconut reaction, so I'm going to let him continue to eat it.

My son was born with multiple food allergies. After showering one day, I applied an all natural coconut butter cream. I then proceeded to nurse my son (he was a about a year at the time) Lo and behold any part of his skin that came into contact with mine was covered in hives. Since then I have included coconuts in the "nut" family and avoid them (I never liked to them anyway - but I love the smell!)

I agree with Glady's. Although my son has multiple food allergies since age one - I was concerned about giving him a healhty saturated fat that I spread extra virgin coconut oil on his HOMEMADE (no seeds or nuts) bread since that time. Later we gave him a blood test for coconut (only after I realized that it was considered a nut. He scored 40 out of 100 but has no reactions when he eats the oil or coconut meat. Now he can tell me these things because he is 6 and healthy, though still quite allergic!
