Blocking Allergies with Pre-Treatment

Filed in archive Hay Fever on December 31, 2008

It's winter and you're having a reprieve from your hay fever. Fine. Enjoy the temporary sneeze-free period. But don't rest on your laurels. If you want to block, or at least reduce the severity of your allergies come spring time, now may be the best time to lay the groundwork.

Don't wait until your allergy symptoms start before taking medications. Experts say you can block the worst by "pretreatment".
What Is Allergy Pretreatment?

Allergy pretreatment is simple: start taking your medicine a few weeks before the allergy season starts. While they might vary by a week or so from year to year, the pollen seasons are really quite predictable, says Hugh H. Windom, MD, associate clinical professor of immunology at the University of South Florida. So if you know the allergens that trigger your allergies, getting a jump on them should be easy.

Consult your allergist if this approach can help you and when is the best time to start your pretreatment regimen.
