Back to School: What Parents Of Kids With Allergies Ought to Know
Filed in archive Living with Allergies on August 23, 2006
By now, some schools have already started, while some will in the next couple of weeks. Particularly for first graders with allergies, this can be an anxiety-ridden time for kids and parents alike.
As parents, it is imperative that you work with your child's teachers, coaches, nurses, and even cafeteria staff, to make school a pleasant experience for your child. School is already challenging enough, and your child can do well without allergy attacks and even life-threatening allergic reactions to think about. Whether he has allergies to food, pollen, insect stings or other allergens, make sure that the adults taking care of your child while he is in school (or even in the schoolbus) are informed about his condition.
You may want to see the guidelines and checklists prepared by the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, and the school and camp resources from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network.
Informing yourself and other people around your child is one of the best way you can prevent allergy incidents from happening.
