The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America has published its annual "Top Asthma Capitals for 2009" based on 12 factors in three groups: prevalence factors (morbidity and mortality statistics), risk factors (air quality, pollen, "100% smoke-free" laws, poverty and more) and medical Factors (medication usage and access to specialists).

This year, Richmond, VA tops the list, up from position #14 last year, due to a number of factors including a higher than average pollen score, continued poor air quality, a lack of "100% smoke-free" laws and others.

Looking at a city towards the end of the list, it is interesting to note that the prevalence factors in Portland, OR, at 97th place, are so bad, even though the risk and medical factors are overall ok. You can access the full report at the link above.

For many people living in "asthma hotspots", relocation is often not possible, but if you suffer from asthma or allergies, and live in Portland, for example, perhaps it may be worth speaking to Portland property management experts to see if there's anything you can do to lower your own risks within your immediate vicinity.
