Are Allerca's Hypoallergenic Cats Ethical?
Filed in archive Pet Allergies on October 26, 2006
Early next year, Allerca will be delivering their specially-bred hypoallergenic cats to the first batch of owners. If you've missed a previous entry, you might want to see a video clip of veterinarian Dr. Bernadine Cruz, a spokesperson for Allerca Lifestyle Pets.
Meghaun Daum, however, questions the ethics and necessity of such cat breeding.
Like a lot of animal-loving allergy sufferers, I'm more than a little intrigued by the idea of having a cat that won't send me to the emergency room, even if that cat costs more than a used Toyota. But like a lot of animal-loving rational human beings, I'm philosophically opposed to the deliberate breeding of already plentiful animals (OK when it comes to pandas, not OK for dogs and cats).
I suppose she has a point. I mean, it's not like one really needs a cat. But then, there are enough human children in the world, neverthess, IVF and all sorts of fertility treatments are being conducted.
What do you think?

By what standard? Who decides this? You? What else don't I "really need"? I refuse to sacrifice my happiness because the world has reached some "optimal" number of children, cats, dogs, SUV's or whatever.
