Food Allergies

I have to admit this is the first report I've read of a severe anaphylactic reaction to mustard.
Emily's family found out about her allergy to mustard in late 2006, when a slice of bread with mustard resulted in an allergic reaction that almost killed her. The mustard caused an allergic reaction inside her throat, causing it to shut down rapidly. There were also giant hives across her face, shoulders, and neck.
Mustard allergy appear to be quite rare, and is more commonly seen in European countries such as France.
A lengthier version of Emily's story also appears in the Boston Local News. I have to agree with her mother when she said that, together with Emily's peanut allergies, it'd be a tough ride when she goes to school.

I also have mustard allergy, though it's not as serious as some. I've never liked it so I didn't end up accidentally eating it until college, when my throat promptly began to close up. I don't develop hives, but I do wheeze and splutter for a few hours or until i get an antihistimine. The other other allergies I have are skin related, such as latex and laundry detergents.

Hello my son Peter is in hospital as I am sending this message. He ate a prawn cocktail last wednesday and immediately starting itching as a result. We went to A & E and they adminstered Piriton and steroids as the rash was covering the whole of his body and large welts appeared everywhere. We thought at first it could be the prawn howvever whilst in hospital he ate a sandwich and his lips and face started to swell immediately. We rang the restaurant and asked for the ingredients in the sauce that was on the prawns. One common ingredient in both the prawn coctail sauce and the sandwich was mustard seeds. We are still not absolutley sure but it is looking very likely this ingredient has caused his allergic reaction. Any advice would be appreciated. Sue Peters Mum

I was researching mustard allergy because my grandson had mustard for the first time, just a dot on his sandwich and he started to cry that his mouth hurt, his lip blew up, his eyes started to itch and he started to sneeze like crazy. I have never heard about this allergy. I guess he might be allergic to mustard seed?

Happened years ago after eating mustard with sausage at a german club. I drank a brandy and coke, then got up to dance. My lips and throat started to swell and we went to hospital straight away. I was swollen so badly that i was unrecognizable. I was able to tell dr that I need an adrenaline injection which i was given. I was in hospital all night and swelling did not go down for about two days. I thought I was going to die. Talk of a tracheotomy, but it was not done after the adrenaline started to work.

Three yrs. ago this Dec. my daughter who just turned three accidentally had tasted but not eaten a residual tiny amount of mustard that cross contaminated while she was going to try a bite of a plain bread pretzel. We had known of peanut allergies that she had and therefore there were no peanut products in my household . When all of a sudden there were large large connected hives and her throat was sounding very different. It all happened so quickly. I called 911 while administ. the newly received epi pen jr. ( I thank God that I had this lifesaving device at hand . The paramedics arrived and we went to the ER where she was given steroid and additional monitoring. We were able to come home after 4 1-2 hrs. It was quite the frightening scenario. Fortunately we have been careful about mustard after having the blood test which determined that it was mustard seed that was her other allergy. The problems for the past 3 yrs since this happened have been that the wonderful country in which we live does not (as of yet) have mustard on the Major Allergen List (as approx 25+ countries of Europe do and now Canada(as of 2010) So it has been difficult as far as labels, food selection for eg at a restaurant, social activities, and public places where mustard often prevails (eg. restaurants with play areas , hot dogs and the that others maybe eating at parks and lakes, and foods in general that people may like to eat that are made with mustard for eg potato salad, seafood salad, Chinese lo mein, sausages, some pizza sauce, many marinades for meats eg ham , mayonnaise pickles and the condiment itself . The list is endless.. the problem huge as of now there is no listing of even the ingredient itself (though Kraft does list mustard on its' products here in the USA ) I have found the thousands of others do not as they can list Spice and it seems to get them by. I pray that this changes .Labels need to be consistent with the severity of the allergen and the info reports show that at least 26+ countries have deemed this a serious allergen . Thanks for this forum to post this. Best of Health for all the allergen sufferers and their loved ones. Keep the positive attitude and hopefully things will get easier in the future with more widespread education of allergies along with compassion.

Actually mustard is the 4th most prevalent food allergy in the country - behind eggs, milk, and peanuts. My lifelong bout with asthma was finally determined to be simply an allergic reaction to mustard which is in lunchmeats, many sauces, mayonnaise, worchestershire sauce, barbeque sauce. It's almost impossible to avoid. I have been in the emergency room numerous times with anaphylaxis. Mustard allergy is not quite rare, does not occur in other countries and is actually quite common. It's surprising that a site devoted to food allergies wouldn't be aware of this.

Hi,
I too am allergic to mustard, have asthma & a heart murmur which makes my reactions very scary...
I've been vegie most of my life & as s.Smith has said that it's in many sauces.
I had a reaction once simpy due to sniffing the stuff.
A lot of companies/supermarkets are great in the "May Contain" etc, but many others are not - as I've found out.
I found a veggie hotdog recently who's company boasts 'gluten, egg & dairy free etc.... They do mention on the allergy side of things that "Allergy Information: Contains wheat gluten & soya protein...
Ok, so I had one bite & one bad reaction. :( epipen, bucket, & feelings of impending doom....
I emailed the company without disclosing what happened & asked are they a mustard free factory. The answer was basically NO & told me that 2 brand of their sausages DO contain mustard as an ingredient.... one of which was the one I sampled.
I've been intouch wiith the FSA & I've been told to go to Trading standards, has anyone else been through something similar?
