I've discussed dental allergies before, focusing on allergic reactions to the metal used in crowns and dental implements, but there are other potential causes of allergies when visiting the dental clinic.

Although rare, allergic reactions can occur as a result of the local anesthetics used to numb the mouth and gums for certain dental treatments. It is usually the preservative in the anesthetic that presents the problem. If you have had an allergic reaction to such medications in the past, be sure to inform your dentist so that alternative ways to anesthetize you can be explored to prevent any adverse reactions.

Those with latex allergies can also experience allergic reactions while in the dentist's office. Masks, gloves and syringes in the dental office are usually made of latex. If you have latex allergies, it is best to schedule your appointment first thing in the morning before latex proteins can build up in the air.

Allergic reactions can also arise from the medications issued for pain relief, antibiotics, etc.

Be sure to inform your dentist about your allergies as part of your complete medical history and carry your EpiPen during your appointments.
