Allergies and Asthma Due to Cockroaches
Filed in archive Asthma , Hay Fever , Insect Allergies on March 19, 2007
I abhor cockroaches because I associate these pests with filth and disease. A report also says that cockroaches in homes and schools is a major contributor in the increasing rates of asthma and other respiratory ailments. Like dust mites, they can cause nasal allergies.
Dacey said the real hazard presented by Blattella germanica is hard to notice, but is still present. She said discarded cockroach shells, dropped after molting, along with the insect's feces, dissipate into the air and become respiratory irritants.
Dacey said schools can be a natural habitat for cockroaches, because the buildings offer food and shelter to the bugs. Although there are no hard figures on the number of cockroaches in schools, Dacey said they are present, hitching rides in children's backpacks or entering with deliveries.
Apparently, cockroaches are more prevalent in the southern states, where the climate permits them to thrive.
