Allergic Rhinitis Can Trigger Migraines
Filed in archive Hay Fever , Living with Allergies on January 19, 2007
We're having a windy, stormy weather at the moment, here at my part of the sky. This, coupled with the unusually warm winter we're having, is likely to make life more difficult for those with allergenic rhinitis or hay fever. In some people, a bout of allergic rhinitis may even trigger migraines.
The most likely culprit is histamine. The chemical is released by immune cells during allergic reactions.
"We think that when nasal allergies occur, a lot of that histamine here can trigger that very first response in the development of migraine headaches, namely vasodilation," said Ku.
That's when blood vessels swell up and stretch. Fred Belcher loves to ski this time of year. He usually suffers later on.
In such cases, you might need steroid nasal sprays or allergy shots, instead of antihistamines. However, it has to be determined if you're having real migraines, or if they are sinus headaches. Best see a doctor for appropriate treatment.

I am on day 9 of a stalled migraine. Maybe I should call my sons allergist and look into this. We've finally got snow here now, but this all started during the warm weather we were having. You may have put some puzzle pieces together for me. I'm going back to the neurologist on Monday and will mention it to him too. I love your site. So helpful in more ways than one:)

I have suffered from migraines for 15 years. I have been to a nuerologist and put on several medications with no relief. I recently was put on progesterone to see if they are hormone related. I have had no relief so far. My migraines are getting worse and am on day 7 of one now. I read this article and immediatly called my Dr.
