A Case of Sun Allergy: Actinic Prurigo

"Ben's self-esteem has taken a battering. He doesn't like to see himself in the mirrorand will often have temper tantrums because of the physical pain and frustration. For a while he became very reclusive and did not want to go to school.
I tried to find out more about actinic prurigo, and this technical article indicate that apart from symptom-management like application of sunscreens and avoiding sun exposure, there's not a lot in terms of treatment. Immunosuppresants such as thalidomides are indicated, but these drugs have a lot of serious side effects and has not been tested in children.
While the world awaits better treatment for such conditions, let us do our part by increasing awareness about such diseases, and by making people understand such cases, perhaps we can make it a little less cruel world for patients with sun sensitivities.
